Bargaining Ruwais seafood market

(See the previous post : http://suma-globalian.com/2018/05/01/earning-uae-international-driver-licence/)

We are in Ruwais Complex Housing area. I am Sol are rushing to the seafood market for lunch, because we didn’t have any breakfast and the scorching weather even makes us exhausted.

In spite of the fountains, why do I still feel baked?

Check. the restaurant we are supposed to cook and eat our lunch. We have to go into the market to buy the ingredients first.

Of course the market peope are selling their products inside the building, to avoid the scorching weather. There are lots of shops selling not only seafoods but meats, groceries and etc.

What a fresh fish! When we arrive in seafood shops, there are several indian-like owners selling the similar fishes, then few customers.

Hmm… I feel I have to negotiate the price until by their reasonable price. We are going for something like small lobster(later I realize it’s Crayfish). one owner says 70 AED for one, but another says 60 AED.

I realize it is not a real price in the market. I start to down the price by fighting the owners each other. Those are dialogs between owners and me as below :

Me : (To Owner A) another said 50 AED. your price is too expensive and my final price is 30 AED.

Owner A : 30 AED??? Are you crazy? it’s no possible.

Me : Okay, I will go to another owner and buy the one. (walking away slowly from the owner A)

Owner A : wait! I can give you the one with 45 AED.

Me : Not acceptable, I told you 30 AED, right? (walking away again)

Owner A : Oh shit….

Me : (To Owner B) now owner A said 45 AED. My final price is 30 AED only.

Owner B : Really? but it’s impossible. As you know, a crayfish with 30 AED is totally non-sence. ~~~~

Me : (grabbing the biggest crayfish) Okay, how about that with 35 AED? I will buy 4 this crayfishes.

Owner B : These are the biggest one. It must be more expensive than 35 AED. How can it be possible with 35 AED …..

Me : Okay, I think it’s very expensive but I can afford to pay 40 AED for a crayfish but the price is including the cost cutting and ready to cook the fishes.

The dialog was dramatized simply. Actually there were lots of conversations which took around 20 mins. (If I go with my girlfriend, she would leave already with fullest angry.) Finally we decide to buy 4 crayfish and 1 big squid and deliver them to the person in charge of cutting and preparing the food.

Sol is watching the negotiation and asks me curiously,

“how come are you good at the negotiation?”

I smile faintly. The situation reminds me when I bargained the taxi fee with lots of rickshaw drivers(3-wheel auto-bike in India, the same as Tuk-tuk in south-east asia countries) around 5 years ago. At that time I was a student without money, and even stingy and easily hurting my pride about my travel. So I finally fought up with the drivers in the negotiation and even some drivers insulted me. But I was so satisfied that I proved my bargaining power against them and I was still prideful for a low-budget traveller. Sometimes I cut the price from 200 INR to 100 INR, and still sticked to 20 INR even though they cut the price by 25 INR.

As the time goes, I have become not stingy but also have understood their situation where they take care of their family and can be selfish for their family. I don’t want to fight to keep my pride anymore but at least I shouldn’t be cheated.

I answered Sol,

“Haha. I had trained myself in India long time ago, I am already prefessional for bargaining.”

(I think I still want to show off my pride with bargaining skill.)

After they prepare the seafood, we pay the money to the owner, then rush to the restaurant to order cooking(grilling, steaming, etc.) of the food. (It cost around 10 AED.)

While we are waiting for the cooking, we look at the menu on the table.(It’s a typical indian restaurant.) We also order some naan, curry and grilled meats.

I am so excited to enjoy the crayfish because the size of crayfish is almost the same as some typical lobster, which cost 40 AED each only!

Still waiting… we even wait for the food more than 30 mins!! (Next time, we should avoid the lunch time, busy with customers…)

Finally the food isn’t disappointing us. Can you feel the taste of crayfish?? We are super satisfied with that, and the unbelievable price! (actually the photo is steamed crayfish but I prefer the grilled one because that is less salty than the steamed one)

We can’t miss the fried big squid. It can be perfect with the yogurt, hot and ketchup sauce. (but the leg part is tough to chew.)

It really worth to come again when I miss seafood.
