My Malaya Story Big 3! – 1. Korean Teacher in SIP3
“안녕하세요!(Hello!) I’m your 선생님(teacher), ahh I forgot I said I am not 선생님 anymore then we are 친구(friends).”

“Thank you for teaching! Now I can say ‘얼마에요?(ul-ma-e-yo?, How much is it?)’ and they understand my Korean!”

(Do you know the happiest moment as a teacher? Definitely it’s when my students contact him.)

That’s right, I was an Korean teacher in University of Malaya. This program was one of Self Improvement Program (SIP) curriculum. But each curriculum was only teachers’ part, Korean class was organized by me and 세은, another Korean teacher. It was definitely one of the happiest moments during my exchange student. Do I look good at English? I don’t think so, because I think teaching is about how to teach well, not how to speak well.

Actually I wasn’t professional teacher so I didn’t have good teaching skill, but what I surely knew was that teaching is for students and is communication with them. So I was always considering about what I can do for my students and how to communicate with students well. In this case, students were willing to take Korean class, so definitely there should be some purpose they want to take my class. That’s why I made questionnaire for them and want to know what they want to learn in my class. After that I tried to be a private tutor for each student. Even though I had to lecture to all students but the lecture was for each student. At the first time it was really burdensome for me, and even my roommate could see how much time I spent for each class. Inspite of these difficulties, I didn’t hate it at all because it was what I really loved to do. Then after each class, it was like I got all happiness in the world! Teaching something is definitely not easy, but it must be worth doing, isn’t it?

Especially Teaching Korean alphabet ‘Hangeul’ should be special. That’s because Hangeul is the only alphabet in the world which the Great King Sejong made for the public who were illiterate (so UNESCO gives a ‘UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize’ for those who were accredited to have a breakthrough achievement for making people literate) and really efficient (only 24 basic vowels and consonants are used to make great number of the whole syllable) and can express more specific pronounciation (there are 받침, Batchim and complex consonants and vowels). so I hope every student or every teacher is proud of using Hangeul.

“가르쳐줘서 감사해요! 이제 ‘얼마에요?’라고 말할 수 있고 그들도 제 말을 알아들었어요!”
(선생님으로서 가장 행복한 순간이 언제인 줄 아나요? 당연히 학생들로부터 연락을 받을 때겠죠.)

맞아요. 저는 University of Malaya에서 한국어 선생님이었습니다. 이 프로그램은 Self Improvement Program (SIP)의 커리큘럼 중 하나였어요. 하지만 각자의 커리큘럼은 전적으로 그 선생님들의 몫이었고, 그 중 한국어 수업은 저와 다른 한국어 선생님인 세은이가 맡았었죠. 한국어 수업은 의심의 여지 없이 제 교환학생 생활 중 가장 행복했던 순간들 중 하나였어요. 제가 영어를 잘할 것처럼 보인다고요? 글쎄요, 제 생각엔 영어로 가르친다는 것도 어떻게 잘 가르치냐의 문제이지 어떻게 (영어를) 잘 말하느냐의 문제는 아니라고 보거든요.
사실 저는 전문적인 선생님은 아니었고 그래서 잘 가르칠 수 있는 기술을 가진 것도 아니었어요. 하지만 제가 확실히 알고 있었던건, 가르치는 것은 학생들을 위한 것이고 그들과 소통하는 과정이라는 것이었죠. 그래서 학생들을 위해 제가 뭘 할 수 있을지, 어떻게 하면 그들이 원하는 바를 잘 알 수 있을지에 대해 저는 항상 고민했어요. 특히 이번 경우에 학생들은 자발적으로 한국어 수업을 들으러 왔었어요. 그래서 분명히 수업을 듣기 위한 이유가 있을 것이라고 생각했죠. 그래서 저는 그들을 위한 설문지를 만들어 그들이 제 수업에서 무엇을 원하는지를 알고 싶어했던 겁니다. 그 후에 저는 각각의 학생들에게 모두 신경을 쓰려고 노력을 했죠. 비록 제가 모든 학생들을 앉혀놓고 하는 강의였지만, 강의 내용에 있어서는 각각의 학생들의 요구를 최대한 반영하려고 했죠. 처음에 이렇게 하는건 저한테 너무 버거운 일이었어요. 아마 제 룸메이트는 제가 한 수업을 준비하는데 얼마나 많은 시간을 투자했는지 봤을겁니다. 그런 어려움에도 불구하고, 전 정말 이렇게 하는 것이 행복했기 때문에 전혀 싫어하지는 않았어요. 매 수업이 끝날 때마다 저는 마치 세상의 모든 행복을 다 거머쥔 것처럼 행복했어요. 무언가를 가르치는 것은 분명히 쉬운 일은 아니지만, 이는 분명히 그럴만한 가치가 있는 것임에는 틀림 없습니다.
특히 한글을 가르치는 것은 더욱 특별하다고 할 수 있지요. 왜냐하면 한글은 세계에서 유일하게도 세종대왕이 글을 읽고 쓰지 못하는 백성들을 위해 만든 글자입니다. (그래서 UNESCO에서는 문맹 퇴치에 막대한 기여를 한 사람에게 ‘UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize’을 수여하고 있습니다.) 그리고 정말로 효율적인 글자이죠. (단지 24개의 기본 자모로 엄청난 숫자의 모든 글자를 다 만들어낼 수 있죠.) 마지막으로 발음을 보다 정교하게 할 수 있어요. (한글에는 그렇게 하기 위해 받침, 쌍자음, 복합모음 등 다양한 발음을 내기 위한 요소들이 존재하죠.) 그래서 특히 한국어를 배웠거나 한국어를 가르치는 사람들이라면 한글에 대한 자부심을 꼭 한번 느꼈으면 합니다.

“Another Story, to be continued…”

In 28th May 2013, Universiti Malaya, Korean students made a sensation with KLUM(Korea Loves UM, Korean Day in UM), which is the first official Korean cultural festival in Universiti Malaya. Everyone looked like happy so I was also really happy. Wasn’t it hard? Of course, it’s really hard to hold this kind of event at the first time, but I not only never regret but also will not. In fact, in the next time I will make it better rather then don’t.
Someone asked me why I am so enthusiastic in such an event, which is not helpful to get a job… and they said that it’s more important to improve your SPEC, which is such kind of superficial qualifications for getting a job, and to travel much because it’s more fun.
For me it’s really stupid question. So I directly replied, “I am willing to do it BECAUSE IT MAKES MORE PEOPLE HAPPY.” Traveling is your pleasure, but this KLUM makes you, us and other people happy. Actually, organizing the event was really hard, and I even had to miss my flight ticket and lost a lot of money and free time. However, what I can surely say is that the satisfaction from the event and people who was happy for the event is bigger than that hardship. I really had been happy during the event and proud of being Korean, and have made awesome memory with other members, and surprisingly, the thing unlikely to be SPEC helped me go to India.
So all these things are for what? I HOPE YOU GUYS ALSO DO THAT, even though it’s not likely to be SPEC, because I was just a Korean, but did it.

2013년 5월 28일, University of Malaya(UM)에서, 한국 학생들이 거센 바람을 몰고 왔습니다. 그날은 UM에서 최초로 공식적인 한국 문화 행사인 KLUM이 개최된 날이죠. 모든 사람들이 행복해 하는거 같았고 저도 행복했어요. 힘들지 않았냐구요? 당연히 힘들었죠.. 이런 행사를 주최하는건 처음이었거든요. 그런데 행사를 주최한걸 후회하진 않았고 앞으로도 그럴겁니다. 오히려 다음에 주최할 때는 이전보다 좀 더 나은 모습으로 하겠죠.
어떤 사람들은 나에게 물었습니다. 취업에도 도움이 안 되는 그런 활동 왜 그렇게 열심히 하냐고… 그리고 그들은 그 시간에 스펙을 쌓거나 (교환학생 왔으니까) 여행 다니는게 더 중요하다고 합니다.
저에게 이건 멍청한 질문이라 하지 않을 수 없네요. 전 바로 대답했습니다. “좀 더 많은 사람들을 행복하게 해 줄 수 있으니까” 여행은 당신의 즐거움이죠, 하지만 이 행사는 당신과 우리와 다른 사람들이 행복해질 수 있는 것이잖아요. 사실 행사를 조직하는 것이 쉬운 일은 아니었죠. 심지어 여행 가려고 미리 사 두었던 항공권까지 버려야했고 그래서 많은 돈과 시간을 잃었어요. 하지만 제가 확실히 말할 수 있는 것은 그 모든 힘겨운 것들보다도 행사로부터의 만족, 사람들을 보면서 느끼는 만족이 더 컸다는 것이죠. 행사 기간 내내 전 행복했었고 한국인으로서 자부심을 느꼈으며 다른 사람들과 좋은 추억도 쌓았습니다. 그리고 놀랍게도 이 스펙 같지도 않은 것이 제가 인도로 가는데에도 도와주었네요.
그래서 뭐 때문에 이렇게 길게 쓰고 있냐고요?
“다른 사람들도 이렇게 했으면 좋겠습니다.”
비록 자신의 스펙에 도움이 안된다고 생각할지라도… 그리고 단지 한국인인 저도 이렇게 했잖아요.

한국인들에게만 한마디 더 하고 싶네요. 제가 행사를 주최하려고 생각하면서 정말로 화났던 것이 있습니다. UM에 와서 인도네시아 축제도 보고 중국 축제도 봤습니다. 작년에는 방글라데시에서도 축제가 있었구요. 이란에서도 매해 행사를 합니다. 하물며 인도네시아, 방글라데시, 이란보다 사람이 더 많은 한국인들은 왜 아무것도 하지 않나요????? 저는 제가 있는 학기만 안하는 건줄 알았습니다. 그런데 현지 학생들에게 물어보니 한국 축제는 그전에도 본 적이 없답니다. 정말 화가 났습니다. 행사 주최를 고민할 무렵 정말 화가 나서 주최하지 않을 수가 없었습니다. 기분 나쁘시면 정말 죄송합니다만, 국제사회에서 어떻게 해야하는지 생각을 좀 해보셨으면 하는 부분이라고 생각합니다.

My Malaya Story Big 3! – 2. Global Village

In 22nd April 2013, Universiti Malaya, there was a diverse cultural event named ‘Global Village(GV)’, which was really big festival but I was engaged in the event only for one and a half of month. Actually this event was held by AIESEC UM, which is one part of AIESEC around the world. They were really awesome members and I am proud of working with them. But the thing is… I regretted knowing AIESEC very lately. Actually when I was engaged in GV team, the preparation of the event was almost done. So I was really sad to hang out with them not so long.

It was my first time to participate in this kind of big international event, although most of members were Malaysian. So it was something like a test about how much I can achieve in the event. They were really systematic, preparing for around 6 months, had regular meeting once a week. Even they had lots of international experiences and there were many other departments in AIESEC, so they was helping and sharing each other. I learned a lot from that, which gave me an insight to organize KLUM.

By the way, there were few international students. Mooostly students were from Malaysia or local students and only some Japanese, Myanmar students… There was also one Korean student in AIESEC UM, but who looked like participating in other department more then GV. So the first Korean mainly participating in GV team was only me, and I even could participate as a representative of Korea in GV Promotional Video, EP sharing about Korean culture(the presentation about Korean culture) and Fashion Show.

Why were they so few? I think that was everyone’s fault. GV team relied on local students more than international students in terms of introducing international culture. And My fault was not to promote GV to others fully. And most of international students who I pushed to participate in were reluctant to participate in the event because they didn’t want to have so much burden that they had to perform in the event.

Anyway, GV was really successful event and I learned a lot from them. I was really proud of being a member of the event. I think I can meet them again around the world someday.

2013년 4월 22일, University of Malaya에서 Global Village(GV)라는 다양한 문화 행사가 열렸습니다. 매우 규모가 큰 행사였지만 제가 그 행사에 참석할 수 있는 시간은 1달 반 밖에 되지 않았습니다. 사실 이 행사는 세계적인 청년 리더십 단체인 AIESEC의 일부인 AIESEC UM에서 주최된 행사였죠. 그들은 정말 대단했고 그들과 같이 행사를 준비했던 것을 영광이라고 생각해요. 그런데 문제는… 제가 AIESEC을 너무 늦게 알아버렸던 거죠. 제가 GV 행사 준비 팀에 들어갔을 때 행사 준비는 이미 거의 끝마친 상태였습니다. 그들과 오랫동안 어울리지 못해 너무 아쉬웠어요…

비록 대부분 멤버가 말레이시아인이었지만, 이런 규모가 큰 국제적인 행사에 참여해보긴 처음이었어요. 그래서 이건 이와 같은 국제적인 행사에서 제가 얼마나 해낼 수 있을지를 시험해보는 좋은 기회였지요. 그들은 참 체계적으로 준비했어요. 준비기간은 무려 6개월이나 되었고, 매주 1회씩 정기적인 미팅을 가졌죠. 멤버 각각은 다양한 국제적인 경험을 가지고 있었어요. 그리고 AIESEC이라는 단체에는 여러가지 프로젝트 팀이 있어서 GV를 위해 서로 돕고 공유하는 점이 인상 깊었네요. 그들한테 많은 것을 배울 수 있었고, 이것은 훗날 제가 KLUM을 주최하는데 있어서 많은 도움을 줬다고 생각해요.

하지만.. GV 팀에는 외국인들이 너무 없었어요. 대부분 학생들은 말레이시아인이나 현지 학생들이었구요. 일부 일본 학생과 미얀마 학생 정도가 있었죠. AIESEC UM에 한 명의 한국인 학생이 있었습니다만, GV 팀보다는 주로 다른 프로젝트에 주로 참여하는 것 같더라구요. 그래서 GV 팀에 주로 참여하는 한국인 학생은 제가 처음이 되었고, 저는 심지어 GV 홍보 영상에 한국인 대표로서 참여하고, 한국문화에 대한 발표도 하고, 패션쇼도 참여하게 되었죠.

대체 뭐가 문제였을까요? 이건 모든 사람의 잘못이에요. GV 팀은 다른 나라의 문화를 소개하는데 너무 현지 학생들(국제 경험이 있는)에게 의존하는 경향을 보였죠. 그런데 저 또한 GV를 다른 사람들에게 많이 홍보하지 못했어요.(그래서 GV 팀에 한국인이 부족했을 수도 있구요.) 그런데 다른 문제는 제가 소개해도 몇몇 사람들은 행사에 참여하길 꺼려했다는거죠. 참여하게 되면 춤이나 노래 같은 공연을 해야 한다는 압박감 때문에요.

어쨋든 간에, GV는 정말 성공적인 행사였고 저는 그를 통해 많은걸 배울 수 있었죠. 전 정말로 그들과 함께 활동할 수 있었던 것에 자부심을 느꼈고, 언젠가 국제 무대에서 그들을 다시 만날 수 있을 것이라 생각합니다.
