The last dinner in the indian restaurant, Ruwais Mall

Today we are going to dinner in the indian restaurant in Ruwais Mall, where we usually visit for dinners outside. Normally I and Sol suddenly decide that on the day or one day ago, but I have planned the dinner 1 week ago this time. Why? Becasue it is the last dinner for our Filipino worker.

The story came from the last year, when our company management decided to reduce the expense by firing some of our staff in the site as the construction progress was being completing and the budget was getting low.

The first target was contract-based staff, including all non-korean staff in our team. The company forced to finish their contract even before the finish date. Suddenly I realized our first non-korean staff was leaving(I just gave him a small gift immediately in his last day)

Then I saw the second one was notified to get fired a month ago even though he still had 4 months left by his contract finish. He suddenly prepared the next job, asking any job vacancies to his filipino friends in another site and submitting his CV. But until now he doesn’t have any confirmed job offer and waiting for his flight back to Philippines tomorrow.

Unusually, our team manager is so thoughtful that he arranged his farewell party with all members. But Korean staff here usually don’t do that because most korean staff are not good at English or not familiar with them personally.

Even most korean staff don’t consider that non-korean ones have the same or higher competence with them, though the non-korean ones are actually not as incompetent as they think. I have ever been talked with a filipino staff in my team and I was so impressive that he proudly told me he started his first work abroad in Kuwait on 1991, and that he is specialized in piping fabrication.

I was so shameful and sad to know his story. It’s obviously a double or triple discrimination for foreign workers. I always have advertised myself “I am working as a construction engineer in UAE” then people might think of the unfriendly and isolated situation as a foreigner, but actually I have lived in more friendly situation within the korean community in UAE.

I have lots of korean friends working in foreign countries, and the most of them seem to be doing well, hopefully. But one of my best friend is struggling herself. She is so strong-willed that she was doing well in Japan even though she was hard to communicate with Japanese and underwent subtle discriminations as a forienger from Japaneses. She recently came to India and looked strenuous.(She recently called me several times) Since I saw she has been hard life in foreign countries, I was so sad to listen to his story.

That’s why I should buy something to him, or really want to buy something to him. He has been working so hard for us for almost 3 years since I started to work here and knew him.

As I was deep in the thought, our company bus already arrives in Ruwais mall, where there is our indian restaurant, Royal Tandoor.

It is a typical indian restaurant accustomed with foreigners. I used to order some naan or roti, some curry like butter chicken and rogan josh, tandoori chicken, biryani(Mostly I don’t prefer biryani) and lassi. After I introduced Sol ‘a perfect combination’ with naan and butter chicken, he always agrees to include the combination in our menu. Our Filipino staff, Mina and Benji almost give up to order but just waiting for my suggestion. Finally we finish our order.

As an appetizer, salty conical crackers, sauces(yogurt, curry-style chill) and small watermelon juices are always provided. We don’t need to eat these but just drink watermelon juice, because the main cuisine is still not coming. If you really want to eat something, I recommend to try it with yogurt sauce (the chilli sauce is little bit an odd taste for me.)

Lassi(yogurt juice)! I usually prefer plain lassi but sometimes it is not available then I order mango lassi.

Finally naans, butter chicken and tandoori chicken came!

my favorite, butter chicken! I have loved it since I worked in Delhi. Unlike other curries, it’s not so spicy, not so oily and smooth, melting my tongue. If I have enough naan or roti, I can eat that up until the sauce empty. Haven’t you experienced it yet?? You must try it now.

Tandoori chicken, which is very popular as a typical indian food for Korean(or international?) When I didn’t know about indian food, I also usually sticked to tandoori chicken. Little bit burning black and some burnt smell are a must for tandoori chicken. If I feel oily, I drop a juicy lemon on the chicken. For me the taste is better than our fried chicken.

all foods are served. Let’s eat!
