My Malaya Story Big 3! – 1. Korean Teacher in SIP3
“안녕하세요!(Hello!) I’m your 선생님(teacher), ahh I forgot I said I am not 선생님 anymore then we are 친구(friends).”

“Thank you for teaching! Now I can say ‘얼마에요?(ul-ma-e-yo?, How much is it?)’ and they understand my Korean!”

(Do you know the happiest moment as a teacher? Definitely it’s when my students contact him.)

That’s right, I was an Korean teacher in University of Malaya. This program was one of Self Improvement Program (SIP) curriculum. But each curriculum was only teachers’ part, Korean class was organized by me and 세은, another Korean teacher. It was definitely one of the happiest moments during my exchange student. Do I look good at English? I don’t think so, because I think teaching is about how to teach well, not how to speak well.

Actually I wasn’t professional teacher so I didn’t have good teaching skill, but what I surely knew was that teaching is for students and is communication with them. So I was always considering about what I can do for my students and how to communicate with students well. In this case, students were willing to take Korean class, so definitely there should be some purpose they want to take my class. That’s why I made questionnaire for them and want to know what they want to learn in my class. After that I tried to be a private tutor for each student. Even though I had to lecture to all students but the lecture was for each student. At the first time it was really burdensome for me, and even my roommate could see how much time I spent for each class. Inspite of these difficulties, I didn’t hate it at all because it was what I really loved to do. Then after each class, it was like I got all happiness in the world! Teaching something is definitely not easy, but it must be worth doing, isn’t it?

Especially Teaching Korean alphabet ‘Hangeul’ should be special. That’s because Hangeul is the only alphabet in the world which the Great King Sejong made for the public who were illiterate (so UNESCO gives a ‘UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize’ for those who were accredited to have a breakthrough achievement for making people literate) and really efficient (only 24 basic vowels and consonants are used to make great number of the whole syllable) and can express more specific pronounciation (there are 받침, Batchim and complex consonants and vowels). so I hope every student or every teacher is proud of using Hangeul.

(선생님으로서 가장 행복한 순간이 언제인 줄 아나요? 당연히 학생들로부터 연락을 받을 때겠죠.)

맞아요. 저는 University of Malaya에서 한국어 선생님이었습니다. 이 프로그램은 Self Improvement Program (SIP)의 커리큘럼 중 하나였어요. 하지만 각자의 커리큘럼은 전적으로 그 선생님들의 몫이었고, 그 중 한국어 수업은 저와 다른 한국어 선생님인 세은이가 맡았었죠. 한국어 수업은 의심의 여지 없이 제 교환학생 생활 중 가장 행복했던 순간들 중 하나였어요. 제가 영어를 잘할 것처럼 보인다고요? 글쎄요, 제 생각엔 영어로 가르친다는 것도 어떻게 잘 가르치냐의 문제이지 어떻게 (영어를) 잘 말하느냐의 문제는 아니라고 보거든요.
사실 저는 전문적인 선생님은 아니었고 그래서 잘 가르칠 수 있는 기술을 가진 것도 아니었어요. 하지만 제가 확실히 알고 있었던건, 가르치는 것은 학생들을 위한 것이고 그들과 소통하는 과정이라는 것이었죠. 그래서 학생들을 위해 제가 뭘 할 수 있을지, 어떻게 하면 그들이 원하는 바를 잘 알 수 있을지에 대해 저는 항상 고민했어요. 특히 이번 경우에 학생들은 자발적으로 한국어 수업을 들으러 왔었어요. 그래서 분명히 수업을 듣기 위한 이유가 있을 것이라고 생각했죠. 그래서 저는 그들을 위한 설문지를 만들어 그들이 제 수업에서 무엇을 원하는지를 알고 싶어했던 겁니다. 그 후에 저는 각각의 학생들에게 모두 신경을 쓰려고 노력을 했죠. 비록 제가 모든 학생들을 앉혀놓고 하는 강의였지만, 강의 내용에 있어서는 각각의 학생들의 요구를 최대한 반영하려고 했죠. 처음에 이렇게 하는건 저한테 너무 버거운 일이었어요. 아마 제 룸메이트는 제가 한 수업을 준비하는데 얼마나 많은 시간을 투자했는지 봤을겁니다. 그런 어려움에도 불구하고, 전 정말 이렇게 하는 것이 행복했기 때문에 전혀 싫어하지는 않았어요. 매 수업이 끝날 때마다 저는 마치 세상의 모든 행복을 다 거머쥔 것처럼 행복했어요. 무언가를 가르치는 것은 분명히 쉬운 일은 아니지만, 이는 분명히 그럴만한 가치가 있는 것임에는 틀림 없습니다.
특히 한글을 가르치는 것은 더욱 특별하다고 할 수 있지요. 왜냐하면 한글은 세계에서 유일하게도 세종대왕이 글을 읽고 쓰지 못하는 백성들을 위해 만든 글자입니다. (그래서 UNESCO에서는 문맹 퇴치에 막대한 기여를 한 사람에게 ‘UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize’을 수여하고 있습니다.) 그리고 정말로 효율적인 글자이죠. (단지 24개의 기본 자모로 엄청난 숫자의 모든 글자를 다 만들어낼 수 있죠.) 마지막으로 발음을 보다 정교하게 할 수 있어요. (한글에는 그렇게 하기 위해 받침, 쌍자음, 복합모음 등 다양한 발음을 내기 위한 요소들이 존재하죠.) 그래서 특히 한국어를 배웠거나 한국어를 가르치는 사람들이라면 한글에 대한 자부심을 꼭 한번 느꼈으면 합니다.
